Biblical References
About this page: This list has shrunk over
the years, I have left on only those works which I wish every
Christian could own. I have not mentioned any Bible translations,
although there are numerous good translations
and paraphrases out there, (New Revised Standard Version, New
Jerusalem Bible, New American Bible, Revised English Bible, New
International Version, Good News Bible, The New Living Translation,
and many more which I use regularly). My only advice to you is
that you use 3 translations at a time (ie: NRSV-NIV-GNB) a literal
translation, a freer translation, and a simplified or paraphrased
translation, this will not only show you translational nuance
but the simpler or paraphrased translation will often strike a
cord that traditional translations don't.
My hope is that this page may help Christians
find tools to help them grow in faith. So that we all may become
more Christ Like as we let Scripture and the Spirit guides us,
to the glory and honour of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ alone.
New Oxford Annotated Bible, Third Edition Michael D. Coogan(Editor)
Widely regarded as one of the best single resources for Bible
study, it contains comprehensive annotations and introductions,
combined with background material and maps.Students, professors
and general readers alike have relied upon The Oxford Annotated
Bible for essential scholarship and guidance to the world of the
Bible for nearly four decades. Now a new editorial board and team
of contributors have completely updated this classic work. The
result is a volume which maintains and extends the excellence
the Annotated's users have come to expect, bringing new insights,
information, and approaches to bear upon the understanding of
the text of the Bible. The new edition includes a full index to
all of the study material (not just to the annotations), and one
that is keyed to page numbers, not to citations. And, to make
certain points in the text clearer for the reader, there are approximately
40 in-text, line drawing maps and diagrams. With the best of the
Annotated's traditional strengths, and the augmentation of new
information and new approaches represented in current scholarship,
the Third Edition will serve as the reader's and student's constant
resource for a new century. "A perennial favorite,"---Christian
Century. Truely an ecumenical study Bible. 2441 pages, hardcover.

Eerdmans Dictionary of the Bible David Noel Freedman, ed.
The Eerdmans Dictionary of the Bible gathers nearly 5,000 alphabetically
ordered articles that thoroughly yet clearly explain all the books,
persons, places, and significant terms found in the Bible. The
Dictionary also explores the background of each biblical book
and related writings and discusses cultural, natural, geographical,
and literary phenomena-matters that Bible students at all levels

contributed to the Eerdmans Dictionary of the Bible. Intended
as a tool for practical Bible use, this illustrated dictionary
reflects recent archaeological discoveries and the breadth of
current biblical scholarship, including insights from critical
analysis of literary, historical, sociological, and other methodological
issues. The editorial team has also incorporated articles that

Eerdmans Commentary of the Bible James D. G. Dunn & John Rogerson, (editors)
No one familiar with the Bible needs to be told that it is a truly
remarkable work. But it takes help to understand this ancient
collection of diverse forms of literature written by different
people across many centuries. The Eerdmans Commentary on the
Bible (ECB) is the finest, most up-to-date single-volume
Bible handbook now available.
Written by world-class Bible scholars, the ECB encapsulates in nontechnical language the best of modern scholarship on the sixty-six biblical books plus the Apocrypha. The only one-volume Bible commentary to cover all the texts (even including 1 Enoch) regarded by one or more Christian churches as canonical, the ECB provides reader-friendly treatments and succinct summaries of each section of the text that will be valuable to scholars, students and general readers alike.
The primary objective of this work is to clarify the meaning of each section of the Bible. Rather than attempting a verse-by-verse analysis (virtually impossible in a one-volume work), the ECB focuses on principal units of meaning - narrative, parable, prophetic oracle, section of argument, and so on - highlighting their interconnectedness with the rest of the biblical text. The volume also addresses and answers major issues - including the range of possible interpretations - and refers readers to the best fuller discussions. Beyond providing reliable, informative commentary, this hefty volume also includes thirteen introductory and context-setting articles that do justice to the biblical documents both as historical sources and as scriptures.
The sixty-seven contributors to the ECB come from a wide variety of backgrounds and are acknowledged leaders in the field of biblical studies. Their contributions stand out either for their fresh interpretations of the evidence, or for their way of asking new questions of the text, or for their new angles of approach. While the translation of choice is the New Revised Standard Version, many of the contributors offer their own vivid translations of the original Hebrew or Greek.
Cutting-edge, comprehensive, and ecumenical,
the ECB is both a fitting climax to the rich body of interconfessional
work undertaken in the latter part of the twentieth century and
a worthy launching pad for biblical study in the twenty-first.

I have left many of my favorite works out, including ONLY what I consider the top works for the average persons library (if you are looking for a multi-volume commentary I feel the Abingdon's New Interpreter's Bible is the best general use commentary series now, even if it is a little pricey. I recommend that you use Online Bible, it has specially keyed features to TDNT and TWOT (see below) which will greatly aid your studies. Retail prices are listed here for convenience although one can find them cheaper (many places like CBD or Amazon.com are places where the street prices from), all prices quoted in US dollars. Other volumes people wanting more in depth study should consider are:
HarperCollins Study Bible - Edited by Wayne Meeks (A NRSV study Bible including the Apocrypha. It's orientation is ecumenical and the verse-by-verse notes give extensive information on historical background, authorship, customs, meanings of place names and word plays in the original language).
New Interpreter's Study Bible - Edited by Walter J. Harrelson ( A NRSV study Bible including the Apocrypha, Is in general a bit more conservative than it's multi-volume sibling, but it does offer a solid commentary on the whole Bible with contemporary critical scholarship. The notes and articles illuminate the linguistic, historical, literary, theological, and liturgical dimensions of the text.)
NIV Study Bible - Edited by Barker, Kenneth (The number one Evangelical study Bible available, over 20,000 in-text study notes provide scholorship and insight from a moderate conservative slant, with numerous cross references).
